STEP 2: Watch the video below to learn how the En-ROADS online climate change simulator works then complete the activity below in your workbook.
Go to https://en-roads.climateinteractive.org. As shown in the above video, this simulator lets you adjust things like fossil fuel use, renewable energy, deforestation, and transportation systems to see how they affect global temperature by the year 2100.
Choose at least three sliders to adjust. Try different combinations and watch what happens to the temperature and emissions graphs. What changes seem to have the biggest effect? Which ones surprise you? After exploring, respond to the following questions:
- What changes did you make in the simulator, and how did they affect the temperature
- Which change had the biggest impact, and why do you think it mattered most?
- What surprised you the most about the way the system responded?
- How did this activity help you better understand the complexity of climate change shown in the videos?
- If you had to explain one solution to someone in your community, what would you choose—and why?
