Activity #2: Final Biomimicry Challenge

Materials: None

STEP 1: Earlier this week, you used Google Earth to explore Yap in both 2D and 3D views, analyzing how the land, coastlines, and ecosystems have changed over time. You also looked for signs of biodiversity and human impact. Now it’s time to take that exploration one step further.

Using what you observed—and what stood out to you as a local environmental challenge—you’ll develop a biomimicry-based solution inspired by nature.

Start by reviewing this important resource: Yap Biodiversity Strategy & Action Plan. Then, head to AskNature.org and search for how plants, animals, or ecosystems solve problems similar to the one you identified. Use these natural strategies to design a creative solution for Yap.

Your task is to create a short presentation that shares your idea. Each slide should include:

  • Slide 1: A picture of your “research team” (you and your group or an avatar/creative image).
  • Slide 2: A clear description of the environmental problem you chose to focus on—based on your Google Earth work and the Yap Biodiversity Plan.
  • Slide 3: Your plan for solving that problem using biomimicry. Include what you found on AskNature and how it inspired your idea.
  • Slide 4: A prototype of your solution—this can be a labeled drawing, diagram, or collage showing how it would work.
  • Slide 5: Final reflections—what did you learn, and how does this project connect to everything we’ve studied about climate, water, pollution, biodiversity, and human impact?

This is your chance to think creatively and locally. I’m excited to see what solutions you come up with to help protect Yap’s future.

You will find a link to a template for your presentation in your workbook.
