STEP 3: Now that you’ve learned how to use your Foldscope, it’s time to explore the hidden world of everyday materials. In this activity, you’ll choose a non-living item—something simple you can find around the house or classroom—and take a closer look under the microscope. You’ll practice preparing a slide, making careful observations, and recording what you see.
Choose a few different item to examine. Below are some options:
A few grains of table salt or kosher salt
A piece of chalk or chalk dust
A bit of ground coffee or part of a coffee bean
Soap scum or dried soap residue
A paper towel or napkin fiber
A single fabric thread (from clothing or a rag)
Dryer lint
Ink from a marker or pen smudge
