Day 11: DNA Extraction
STEP 1: Now we’re switching gears—from the world of physical and chemical reactions back into the living world. But not just any part of life—we’re going all the way down to the core of what makes life possible: DNA.
DNA is the instruction manual inside every living cell. It holds all the information needed to build, run, and repair living things. It’s tiny, invisible to the naked eye—and absolutely amazing.
Watch the video below to start exploring what DNA is, what it does, and why it’s the most important molecule in life. Get ready to be amazed by the code that connects all living things!
STEP 2: Although it’s mysterious, all living things have DNA—even plant cells. Now, you’re going to extract DNA so you can actually see it with your own eyes. This won’t look like the double helix you’ve seen in pictures, but you’ll be able to see its physical form, floating right in front of you.
Before you start, think back to the slime you made earlier. Could it have components like DNA? How is this different or similar?
Follow the video and image below to extract DNA from fruit. As you work, reflect:On a molecular level, how is this DNA like the creations you’ve already made and touched in class?
What does it feel like to hold the instructions for life in your hands?
DNA is in all of us, after all.
STEP 3: Now that you’ve extracted your own DNA, it’s time for a new challenge! Revisit your Foldscope technique and try to view the DNA up close. Carefully place a small piece of the DNA you extracted onto a slide, cover it with a cover slip, and see what you can observe. You might find this video helpful. Once you’ve made your observation, take a photo of what you can see and upload it using the QR code below. Click here to see all posts.
