Laparoscopic Lab

The Laparoscopic Surgical Team Roles

1. The Surgeon (The Hands)

  • Task: Uses the long tools inside the box to perform the activity.

  • Focus: Your eyes must stay glued to the screen. You must verbally tell the Camera Operator where to move.

2. The Camera Operator (The Eyes)

  • Task: Handles the borescope camera.

  • Focus: Watch your own hands and the camera cable to ensure you are providing a steady, clear view exactly where the surgeon is working.

3. The Screen Tech (The View)

  • Task: Holds the actual display screen steady.

  • Focus: Adjust the height and angle of the screen so the Surgeon doesn’t have to crane their neck. If the image flickers or goes dark, you fix it.

4. The Procedure Manager (The Brain)

  • Task: Keeps track of time, prepares next activity. 5 Minutes per procedure.

  • Focus: Reads the activity steps aloud to the Surgeon. Keeps strict track of time and tells the team when to stop.

5. The Surgical Assistant (The Support)

(For groups of 5 only. If a group of 4, the Procedure Manager does these tasks.)

  • Task: Quality control and materials.

  • Focus: Acts as a second set of eyes on the screen to offer suggestions if the surgeon gets stuck. Helps quickly reset the materials inside the box when the time is up.
