Day 2: Land Surveillance

STEP 1: Now it’s time to practice navigating the Moon terrain with your rover. Go to the same site you used during the rover training session. This time, click “Units” on the left, then select the “Competition Readiness” lesson. Complete all of the steps in the “Training Camp 1: Driving Around” activity.  See image below.

Now that you’ve had some basic driving practice, it’s time for your first Moon mission! Your task is to program your rover to drive to a sample site, then turn around and return to the starting point. Here’s what to do:

  1. Mark your course: With your teacher and team, use tape to mark two spots on the floor—one for the starting point and one for the sample site. These should be about 4 feet apart.
  2. Plan your route: Write a program that drives your rover from the starting point to the sample site, turns it around 180 degrees, and drives it back.
  3. Use what you know: Try using tools you’ve practiced with, like straight driving, turning, and even the gyro sensor if you’re ready!
  4. Test and improve: Don’t worry if it doesn’t work perfectly at first. Keep testing and adjusting your code until it works.

Be creative, work as a team, and have fun exploring! Once you have successfully accomplished your land surveillance mission, record a video of your rover in action and upload  using the QR code below.  In the “Subject” area, include your first name and/or your team members’ names.
