STEP 1: It’s now time to use the Databot (see this link) to collect real-time data while surveying Mars with your drone. Below, you’ll see a picture of the Databot sensor charging. First, locate your Databot and make sure to charge it fully.
STEP 2: Download Vizeey from the App Store or Google Play on any smartphone . Once installed, carefully view this video to learn how to set up and load all data analysis tools for your databot visible throuth the Vizeey app. The QR code shown in the video is below for convenience. Written instructions for setting up your databot can also be found here.
STEP 3: You’ve now been assigned to investigate a mysterious region of Mars that may be leaking carbon dioxide (CO₂) gas from an underground source. Scientists believe this area could indicate past or even present volcanic activity—an exciting discovery that might reveal more about the planet’s interior and climate history.
To confirm the presence of this CO₂ hotspot, your team will use your drone and a mounted databot to take airborne measurements of CO₂ levels. You will simulate this potential emission zone by placing two Alka-Seltzer tablets in a cup of water, generating a steady release of carbon dioxide gas (click here view reaction) One of you will fly the drone using the Tello app, while the other will monitor CO₂ levels in real time using the Vizeey app connected to the databot.
You’ll use your 3D-printed databot mount to keep the sensor secure and stable during flight.
Your success will depend on careful coordination between pilot and sensor operator. Can you locate the source using only the data, just like a real Martian science crew would? Prepare your drone, calibrate your equipment, and get ready to fly into the unknown. A successful mission would result in a CO₂ spike similar to that shown in the image and video below.
STEP 4: Once you’ve successfully detected CO₂, repeat the challenge—this time recording a video that captures both your drone in flight and the CO₂ levels changing on the Vizeey app to document your success. When you’re done, upload your video using the provided QR code. In the “Subject” area, include your first name and/or your team members’ names. Click here to see all uploaded videos.
