Day 4: Experimental Design

STEP 1: Today you get to run your own investigation using your Foldscope! Choose a sample from your environment and explore a question you’re curious about. You can come up with your own idea or try one of the suggestions below.

Follow this format:

  1. Question: What do I want to find out?
  2. Sample(s): What will I look at?
  3. Method: How will I prepare and compare my slides?
  4. What did I notice? Write down what you see and take pictures if you can.

Need an idea? Try one of these:

  • Do different leaves have different cell shapes?
  • Does saltwater change how plant cells look?
  • What’s floating in pond vs. tap water?
  • How do different fabrics look up close?
  • How do my cheek cells change after drinking different beverages?
  • What do grains of salt, sugar, or sand look like under a Foldscope?

You’re the scientist now—ask questions, get curious, and explore!

STEP 2: Use the QR code below to upload your Foldscope experimental plan and results. Write out your response using the format below. Be sure to type your first name in the “Subject” line when you upload.

What to include:

  1. Question: What do I want to find out?
  2. Sample(s): What will I look at?
  3. Method: How will I prepare and compare my slides?
  4. What did I notice? (Write what you expect to see—or what you end up seeing if you already started!)
