Goal: To explore how sound and music bring movies to life, and for you to become a sound designer by creating your own audio for a film clip!
Why This Matters: Sound is a huge part of how we experience movies. It builds suspense, makes us laugh, cues emotions, and makes the world on screen feel real. Careers like Sound Designer, Foley Artist, Film Composer, and Audio Engineer are all about creating these amazing auditory experiences. Many of these professionals studied subjects like music technology, audio production, or film at university.
Meet Robert Duncan – a four-time Emmy®‑nominated Canadian composer whose dynamic scores have brought iconic TV series and films to vivid life. After honing his craft in Canada, Robert moved to Los Angeles and soon became the composer for the final season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He later scored eight seasons of Castle—even earning an Emmy® nomination in 2009 for his powerful theme—and went on to compose for acclaimed shows like The Unit, Lie to Me, Timeless, S.W.A.T., The Night Agent, and many others.
Robert’s innovative approach to sound involves blending traditional instruments—like piano, trumpet, pipe organ, and drums—with experimental timbres mined from deconstructed pianos, submarine hulls, discarded metal, and more. He recorded this video for you:
