Problem Solving Challenge

Take some time to think about a problem that you might have in your own life or see. Think about how to create a 3d solution to solve that problem.

Some examples include:

Your cousin needs a place to hold their bag when they are out at a restaurant so they don’t have to put it on the floor.

You want to be able to charge your devices while you are working on homework but in style.

Your best friend likes to go on long walks with their new puppy but always forgets the dog bowl.

Get Started Problem Solving

Take some time to identify problems and issues that you or others might face in day to day life. Chat with others and think about how you could solve those problems. Decide on your favorite solution and design it. Use TinkerCAD to bring your drawing to life!

Careers

Think about careers that involve the use of 3D design and printing by clicking the “+” button below. Write your name in the “Subject” area.

Current 3D Printing Usage

3D printing has been around since the early 1980s in Japan. Since the 1980’s we have seen 3D printing go from something costly and unknown technology to much more affordable for an average consumer and accessible to use than previous versions.
Below, you will spend some time exploring the videos below that dive deep into different careers. When you are done, reflect on which 3D design related career was your favorite and why.

Thingiverse Remix Challenge

Ready to explore the biggest 3D design playground on the internet? Let’s dive into Thingiverse, remix cool creations from around the world, and make them your own!

What is Thingiverse?

Thingiverse is the world’s largest community for sharing 3D printable designs. It’s a space where anyone can discover, customize, and remix 3D models. Most designs are licensed under Creative Commons, meaning you’re totally allowed (and encouraged!) to change things up and get creative.

Let’s Get Started:

  1. Go to Thingiverse.com
Use the search bar or explore trending and featured designs. Look for objects that interest you—tools, toys, art, gadgets—whatever catches your eye!

  2. Pick a Favorite Design
Found something awesome? Click “Download All Files” to grab the 3D model files (.stl format).

  3. Open TinkerCAD
Head over to TinkerCAD.com and start a new project.

  4. Import the Design
Click “Import” in the top-right corner of TinkerCAD and upload one of the .stl files you downloaded. (⚠️ Only .stl files will work!)

  5. Remix & Make It Yours!
Now comes the fun part—edit, mash-up, reshape, resize, or add something totally new to the design. Want to personalize it with your name or make it more useful? Go for it!

  6. Show It Off
Before you print, share your final remix with your instructor. They’ll help you decide if it’s ready for the build plate!

Tips for Remixing:

  • Look for simple shapes or modular parts to start with.

  • Think about how your changes will affect how the object prints.

  • Add your personal style—that’s what remixing is all about!
