Introduction to the Engineering Design Process

Why the Engineering Design Process?

The Engineering Design Process is extremely useful when working on any type of STEM project, especially the projects and challenges that we will be working  with today. The Engineering Design Process is used by all types of people especially engineers. An engineer is a person who wants to fix problems and they want to know how and why things work.

Design Using the Engineering Design Process

The Engineering Design Process helps us figure out problems and solve them like engineers. Today you will use this process to create a marble roller coaster, a scribble bot, and during our crane challenge.

  • What is my problem?
  • What are my constraints?
  • Brainstorm some solutions to your problem.
  • Do some research with your team if needed.
  • Draw out your ideas on a piece of paper. Don’t forget to check the materials list below to include anything you might need.
  • Use your plan to create your project.
  • Think about what you would do to improve it (make it better) and share with your group.
  • Ask them for their feedback too and reflect on how you can improve your final design.
  • You will go through the process again using the feedback from your group and your own observations.
