Day 2: Solar Water Pump

Instructions (Part I): Bring your solar panel outside and follow the method in the video below to test the voltage across your solar panel using the multimeter provided.

Instructions (Part II): Choose a specific outdoor location where you and your team will work. Adjust the direction and angle of your solar panel to maximize voltage output. Watch the video below for guidance on placing your solar panel strategically for optimal sun exposure.

Instructions (Part III): Now that you know the ideal location and angle for your solar panel, use this video as a reference to set up the water pump.

Instructions (Part IV): Using your setup from “Part III” and your optimal location from “Part II,” along with the provided graduated cylinder, design an experiment to determine your pump’s flow rate in mL/min.

Instructions (Part V): Now that you have determined the optimal location and angle for your solar panel and have measured your pump’s flow rate, it’s time to put your solar water pump to work! Choose one of the options below, or create your own challenge!

Construct a Water-Powered Artwork: Using your solar panel and pump, and the misc. materials provided, create a piece of kinetic art that incorporates moving water. Think about how the movement of the water can bring your artwork to life and explore different artistic designs.

Build a Water Irrigation Model: Using your solar panel and pump, and the misc. materials provided, create a small-scale irrigation system that distributes water evenly across a simulated garden space. Use the bottles and straws to direct water to different “plants.” Experiment with different setups to see which one delivers the most consistent water flow

Instructions (Part VI):  Use the QR code provided below to upload a video of your creation in action. Type your first name in the “Subject” area.
