Days 3-4 (Energy from Hydrogen Fuel Cells)

Instructions (Part I): Carefully view the below video to learn how to “split” water molecules into individual hydrogen and oxygen diatomic molecules using the process of electrolysis. This process will be used to generated the hydrogen needed for your Fuel Cell car!

Instructions (Part II): Use the materials provided to build your own electrolysis experiment. Carefully observe the production of hydrogen gas and oxygen gas as shown in the video. Try reversing the direction of the battery and notice how the bubbles change. What do you think is happening when you do this?

Instructions (Part III): Carefully view the below video to learn how the elements hydrogen and oxygen can be leveraged in a “Fuel Cell” to produce electrical energy and water.  How is the source of hydrogen in this video different than the source of hydrogen from your electrolysis experiment above? Click here and view an animation of a hydrogen fuel cell.

Instructions (Part IV): Carefully view the below video to learn about the fuel cell car you will create .

Instructions (Part V): Click here, and using the materials provided, build your fuel cell car.

Instructions (Part IV): Experiment with your car’s motion and behavior. When comfortable, conduct a race with another car.  Record and upload video of your car racing another car.  Type your first name in the “Subject” area. A QR code is provided below for ease of upload.
