Activity #3: Detoxification

Materials:  hydrogen peroxide, plastic cups, tape, soap, food coloring (if available), yeast

Part 1: Carefully view the below videos. Complete the summary in your workbook.

Part 2: As mentioned in the above video, peroxisomes contain enzymes (proteins) called “Catalase” that are responsible for breaking down toxic hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen bubbles. Keeping this in mind,carefully recreate the activity shown in the video below. Note, you will not use food coloring. Wear safety glasses. Document your observations in your workbook.  

Part 3: Reflect on our lab where yeast was exposed to different amounts of hydrogen peroxide. How does the presence of catalase in yeast contribute to breaking down hydrogen peroxide? Discuss why this reaction is important for the yeast’s survival.
