Activity #2: Gas Production
Materials: film canisters, alka-seltzer, water, safety glasses
Part 1: Carefully view the below video showing the chemical reaction between an Alka-Seltzer tablet and water in a film canister.
Part 2: Keeping the above video in mind, imagine a method for determining the combination of water and Alka-Seltzer that will yield the biggest explosion. Reflect on this challenge and clearly outline your procedure, including data collection methods in your workbook.
Part 3: Carefully open your Alka-Seltzer tablets, fill a cup with water, and set out your film canisters. In preparation for explosion, create an open/safe space that can be easily cleaned up. Follow your procedure carefully, collecting data throughout. Record data in your workbook. Wear safety glasses.
Part 4: Review the results from each test. Based on your data, use your remaining tablets and clean film canister to create the ultimate explosion by mixing the perfect combination.
