Engineering Design Challenges are a great way practice the STEM mindset. Students will go through a cyclical process to “Imagine, Prototype, and Share” their work during various design challenges. Challenges include, building an earthquake-proof structure, creating a water filter, designing a game controller, and determining the optimal ratio of chemicals needed to fuel a rocket. Learn how to design and program games. We’ll use principles from Andy Schell’s book The Art of Game Design, MakeCode, BrainPad, and the Scratch programming interface to design our graes. In this workshop, you’ll make games, receive feedback, and iterate your builds. The goal is for each student to publish their game on itch.io an independent game site. Computer Science

Build and program your own computer! After students assemble the computer using only blueprints, they start the computer and learn to program it within Minecraft. The Raspberry Pi computer runs Minecraft and other education programs and is a great way to tap into self-directed learning. This workshop works great with programs that have limited internet connectivity. This is a perfect workshop for students that love Minecraft and tinkering. We’ll use the MIT App Inventor to design and build apps. Before we can build an app we’ll go through the Design Thinking process to come up with ideas for apps to build. Although learning HTML to build a site is rewarding, we’ll use what most modern companies build their sites with WordPress. Using WordPress we’ll learn and use plugins to build a site that can be a portfolio, online business, or blog. Websites take time. During this workshop students will build and program an Arduino robot. Our lights, tv, thermostat and a myriad of other things are controlled by the internet. During this workshop students will learn and build IoT Arduino based projects to learn and explore the exciting field of products.
