Session 2

Day 2: Calibration & Automated Navigation

Local Career Spotlight: Automation Engineers. At APM Terminals (Pier 400), massive Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) move shipping containers around the yard without human drivers. Engineers must program and calibrate these robots so they drive perfectly straight and navigate safely. News Article Link.

Instructions (Part I): Finish any remaining assembly on your Cyber:bot. Once complete, it is time to calibrate the motors. Go to the Are the Servos Centered? tutorial and run the centering code so your bot stays perfectly still when stopped.

Instructions (Part II): Program your first automated routes. Use the Navigation tutorials to write code that makes your Cyber:bot:

  • Drive forward for 3 seconds.

  • Drive backward for 3 seconds.

  • Pivot 90 degrees to the left and right.

Instructions (Part III): The Shipping Lane Challenge. Work with your partner to program your robot to drive in a perfect square around a “cargo container” (a box or cones on the floor). Show a facilitator once you successfully complete the loop!
