Series 2, Session 1

Robot Readiness and Team Launch

Career Spotlight: Automation Technician

Automation technicians help install, test, repair, and improve machines used in places like the Port of Los Angeles. They make sure equipment works correctly and help systems run safely and efficiently.

Today’s Mission

Today you will get ready for Series 2 of Cyber:bot Robotics.

If you are new, you will begin building your Cyber:bot and learning how the workshop works.

If you are returning, you will inspect your robot, get it ready for action, and continue your work.

What Success Looks Like

By the end of today, you should be able to say:

  • I made real progress on my Cyber:bot
  • I know what I am supposed to do in this workshop
  • I used teamwork and problem solving
  • I am more ready for coding and testing next time

Today’s Flow

  • Welcome and launch
  • Build or continue your robot
  • Quick checkpoint

Your Job Today

You are getting started with Cyber:bot Robotics. Your goal is to begin building carefully, learn how to use the resources, and get comfortable with how this workshop works.

Steps

  1. Meet your partner and get your robot kit.
  2. Open the Cyber:bot tutorial page.
  3. Begin building your robot carefully, step by step.
  4. Check each part before moving to the next step.
  5. Ask questions when needed.
  6. Make sure both partners are helping and learning.

Important Reminders

  • Build carefully, not quickly.

  • If something does not look right, stop and compare it to the tutorial.
  • It is okay if you do not finish everything today.

When You Finish

  • Practice naming the parts with your partner
  • Open MakeCode and explore the workspace
  • Be ready to explain one thing your team worked on today

Continue Your Work: Returning Technicians

Your Job Today

You are returning to Cyber:bot Robotics with experience from Series 1. Your goal is to get your robot ready for Series 2, test it, and continue your learning.

Steps

  1. Get your returning robot.
  2. Inspect the wheels, chassis, wires, and battery connection.
  3. Open MakeCode and load or rebuild a simple movement test.
  4. Test whether your robot powers on and responds.
  5. Notice whether your robot drives straight or drifts.
  6. Record anything that may need adjustment next time.
  7. Help a new team only after your own robot is checked.

Important Reminders

  • Help by explaining, not by taking over
  • Focus on getting your own robot ready first
  • Good technicians test, notice problems, and make smart adjustments

Returning Technician Challenge

See if your robot can:

  • Move forward
  • Stop cleanly
  • Show whether it drifts left or right

When You Finish

  • Test a short drive path
  • Notice whether p18 and p19 need different speeds
  • Write down what your robot may need next time
  • Be ready to share one tip for new students

Quick Checkpoint

Before class ends, make sure your team can answer these questions:

  • What did we build, inspect, or test today?
  • What problem did we solve?
  • What is our next step?

Closing Share

Be ready to share one of these:

  • One thing your team built or checked
  • One problem your team solved
  • One thing you learned about the robot
  • One job skill you used today
